About Ilora

A place built from
obsession, not obligation.

Ilora was not conceived in a boardroom. It grew from years spent in the field — watching, photographing, and learning from the Mara. Everything here is an expression of that relationship with this wilderness.

Why Ilora exists — the Masai Mara

Why Ilora
exists.

After years spent in the Mara, one truth became impossible to ignore: the moments people remembered most were rarely the busiest ones. Not the longest checklist of sightings, but the sunrise watched in silence. The conversation around a fire. The feeling of waking to birdsong and knowing there was nowhere else to be.

Ilora was created around those moments.

The camp was designed not simply as a place to stay, but as a way of experiencing the Mara more deeply. The position of every suite, the pathways through the bush, the pace of the day, and the experiences offered after dark were all guided by a simple intention: to bring guests closer to the spirit of the Mara.

Only a small fraction of Ilora's thirty acres carries any structure. The rest remains as wilderness. Not because it looks better on paper, but because some of the most important things a place can offer are space, silence, and the freedom to remain wild.

Our conservation approach

I came to know the Mara as a student, not a visitor. Ilora is what I learned.

Alankar
Chandra
Wildlife Photographer

Alankar Chandra spent the first part of his career in the corporate world — finance, consulting, technology. He was good at it. But the pull of the wild was stronger. In 2016 he walked away and built a life around wildlife photography and responsible travel, spending years in the field across India, East Africa, Nordics, and the Americas.

The Mara kept calling him back. He came to know it not as a visitor but as a student — learning its light, its predators, its seasonal rhythms, its silences. Ilora is what happened when that knowledge met a question: what would a camp look like if it were built by someone who truly understood this place?

Every photograph on this site, and on the walls of Ilora's reception gallery, was taken by Alankar in the field. His work has been published internationally, exhibited, and recognised with awards. He speaks on wildlife conservation, responsible tourism, and the intersection of photography and place.
